Living in St. George, Utah, means sunshine, picturesque scenery, and quiet desert living—but just like anywhere else, your home’s electrical systems don’t last forever. And when something’s off, it doesn’t usually scream. Most of the time, it whispers—a flickering light, a warm wall plate, or a breaker that kicks off for no clear reason.

Ignore those whispers long enough, and you might find yourself with a louder, more expensive problem.

We’ve pulled this guide together to help St. George homeowners recognize the 7 most common signs it's time to call in a licensed electrician. Not sure what really counts as a problem? Keep reading—and learn what to do before it turns into an emergency.

1. Breaker Trips Often

Not just “too many appliances”—this is your system telling you something.

If a breaker keeps tripping over and over, it starts to wear on your patience. And if it happens whenever you run the microwave and toaster together, you’re not the only one. But just because it’s common doesn’t mean it’s harmless.

One of our clients in Ivins said she had to keep a flashlight in the kitchen drawer because her breaker tripped almost every other night. We did a quick check and found a weak breaker and an overloaded circuit that wasn’t built for today’s appliances.

What to do:

If your breakers are tripping on a regular basis, it could be overloaded circuits, an outdated panel, or faulty wiring. Call High Output Electric for a panel inspection or a load check to get it sorted before it becomes a bigger issue.

2. Burning Odor or Discolored Outlets

If it smells burnt, don’t wait to find out why.

Smelling something like burnt plastic or rubber—especially around outlets—is never a good sign. It often means the insulation around your wires is melting, or the wiring itself is overheating behind your walls. In some cases, you might even notice brown or black smudges on the outlet.

This isn’t something you sleep on. Electrical fires are a top cause of house fires, and most of them start in the walls—quietly, until they don’t.

What to do:

Turn off the breaker connected to that outlet and unplug anything that’s connected to it. Then schedule an electrical safety inspection immediately.

3. Flickering or Dimming Lights

Not a ghost—just bad wiring or voltage dips.

A woman in downtown St. George called us convinced her recessed lights were haunted. They dimmed whenever her refrigerator kicked on. Turns out the fridge was pulling power from the same circuit that fed all her kitchen lighting. That setup was never right to begin with.

Flickering or dimming lights usually point to loose wiring, unbalanced circuits, or voltage fluctuations. If it’s happening in multiple rooms, the issue might go deeper—maybe all the way to your panel.

What to do:

This is often a sign of loose wiring or low circuit balance. Our residential repair techs can track down the cause and get it fixed safely.

4. Outlets That Are Warm to the Touch

Warm = warning. Always.

A warm outlet might seem harmless, but it’s a signal something’s not right. It can mean the circuit is overloaded, the wiring is loose, or the insulation is breaking down. If you can feel the heat through the cover plate, it’s already a fire hazard waiting to happen.

What to do:

Stop using that outlet immediately. Don’t plug anything else into it, and don’t ignore it. Have the wiring checked out to rule out any serious damage.

5. Buzzing or Crackling Sounds

Your switches shouldn’t sound like bacon frying.

If you hear a faint buzzing, popping, or sizzling noise when flipping a switch or plugging something in, that’s a problem. That sound usually comes from arcing—when electricity is jumping across a gap inside the wiring.

A customer in Little Valley told us she assumed the buzzing was just “weird acoustics” in her home office—until the switchplate cracked from the heat.

What to do:

Shut off the power to that area. Then call High Output Electric to get those switches and outlets inspected and repaired right away.

6. Small Electric Shocks from Devices

That little zap means something isn’t right.

If you feel a small shock or tingle when you touch the cord of your laptop or plug something in, don’t just brush it off. That can be caused by bad grounding, loose wiring, or sometimes even moisture in the outlet.

It’s a common issue in older homes around St. George—homes that haven’t had a full electrical update in 30+ years.

What to do:

Stop using that outlet and have a qualified electrician check your home’s grounding. We’ll make sure everything is code-compliant and safe.

7. Two-Prong Outlets or No GFCIs

Old outlets = outdated safety.

Still got two-prong outlets around the house? Those don’t offer the grounding protection your modern electronics need. And if your kitchen or bathroom doesn’t have GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets, that’s a problem too—especially in places where water and electricity mix.

We worked on a historic home near St. George Boulevard recently. No GFCIs at all. They were running a countertop dishwasher on a two-prong adapter. One splash of water and it could’ve gone sideways—fast.

What to do:

We’ll upgrade your outlets and install GFCIs where needed. It’s a simple fix that adds a whole new level of safety to your home.

What You Should Do If You See These Signs

Don’t wait until it gets worse.

The biggest mistake we see is homeowners putting off the call. Electrical issues often start small—a flicker here, a warm outlet there—and build into something much more serious.
